1:00 – 1:45         “River of Revenue- Recreation, Scenic Rivers and the Local Economy”- Panel: Linda LaFontaine -Scottsville                                     Chamber of Commerce, Mariah Burgess- Rivanna River Company, Lynn Crump -Scenic Rivers                                                                   This keynote session will underscore the importance of outdoor recreation and river vistas to local                                                              communities. The panel will discuss how natural spaces and adventure tourism benefits the local economy and the                                  quality of life of residents.

                           “Overcoming Soft Barriers to Greenway Connectivity in Charlottesville Albemarle” 
                             Peter Krebs, Piedmont Environmental Council  
                             The Piedmont Environmental Council and the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission are working to create                               a comprehensive network of walking and bicycle infrastructure in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Along the                                     way, PEC Community Outreach Coordinator Peter Krebs uncovered many assumptions that have reinforced social                                   barriers to physical connectivity. It turned out that much of this received wisdom was incorrect and counterproductive.                               By working through these issues, progress is being restored and new champions are coming into the mix. Peter will                                 talk about how the community is gaining access to private lands, how localities are working together on common                                     problems, how to identify missing stakeholders, and why their participation can make a difference.
   
                             
                           “The Wildrock Way” – Paige Lindblom, Wildrock
                              Did you know that kids are spending an average of 7 hours a day on screens and only 7 minutes outside?  Wildrock                                is sounding the alarms on this public health crisis.  Join us for an informative session about how we are encouraging                                nature connection in schools and neighborhoods in our community.  This effort includes promoting unstructured                                        nature play, fostering stewardship, and advocating for the importance of spending time outdoors.

                             Nature Journaling- Recording a Place (Limit 20, Must Preregister)- Rhonda Roebuck
                             Anyone can do this!  Find simple ways to sketch and write about a special place.  Rhonda will walk you through the                                 steps to make a journal page on place.  She will provide all the materials and send you away with ideas to record                                     your “ place" at home.  This will be fun and hopefully get you started on an interesting project.  Everyone should                                        record something about their life!

                             Scenic Rivers- James River Heritage Trail – Lynn Crump, Jennifer Wampler
                             In this interactive session, learn about Virginia's Scenic Rivers program and current studies within the Middle                                           James watershed.  Celebrate what The Virginia's Scenic Rivers Program has accomplished over the past 50 years                                   and about learning opportunities and field trips at an upcoming national river symposium in Richmond. Learn about                                 the parallel planning efforts for the James River Heritage Trail and how you can contribute and get more involved.
